Vintage Planter Cabinet Revamp

Vintage Planter Cabinet Revamp

Mel and I have looked for a slim storage cabinet for our laundry area. We were busy at Midway Antique Mall stocking our showroom when I noticed this cabinet one of our fellow dealers was selling. What caught our eye was the planter on top. I knew that would add loads of interest to the piece. Another great thing about this piece is that it can also be used as a room divider.

Of course, the plain white color had to go. We decided to paint it the colors “aqua rapids” & “dusty rose”. I light sanded the piece and started to apply color.

Then, I shot over to Michaels and picked up a bunch of artificial succulents for the planter. We’ve tried to keep real plants alive with no luck.

Now that this is done, we have the much needed storage in our laundry room. Off to the next thing to restore!

1951 Male Reglor Bullfighter Lamp Take Two

1951 Male Reglor Bullfighter Lamp Take Two

Recently, I decided to replace the light bulb sockets and harps on our Reglor bullfighter lamps. When we originally purchased these lamps, they arrived busted. Fortunately, I was able to restore them. Sometimes, when you restore chalkware lamps that have significant damage, there are hidden weak spots under the surface. When I tried to attach the new bulb socket, the head of the male bullfighter lamp cracked into several pieces. Needless to say, I was completely devastated. For those of you who have restored these lamps might know, it’s a tedious process. Hours of my work literally crumbled in my hands. To make matters worse, upon further examination it appeared that I would be unable to repair the damage.

Once I came to grips with what had happened, I jumped on eBay and was able to purchase a replacement male bullfighter lamp. Fortunately, the seller did not live too far away, and we were able to meet up to pick up the lamp. It’s not often that you can find a same day replacement for a vintage lamp!

Unpainted Reglor

That’s not dirt you see, that’s nicotine. You wouldn’t believe how much came off.

The color scheme of the original lamps was orange and brown. These were colors we were never keen on. The lamp we just picked up needed to be repainted, so I took the opportunity to go with a whole new color scheme. The colors I went with are vintage coral and hematite (a graphite color). I think these two colors compliment one another very well.

After about a full day of painting, here is the result.

I decided to add a little more detail to the lamp.

Of course, these aren’t the original lamp shades and we’re not really happy with them. We plan to replace the shades with ones that incorporate the same colors as the lamps.

1957 Sylvania Halolight Blonde Tabletop Television

Halo

Please excuse those unsightly cords,  I plan to remedy that soon enough.

A while back I came across this television in Sacramento.  I thought it might be a good conversion project for our friend Justin of Stellar Electronics.  Justin said he liked the tv, so I offered to pick it up.  But, once I picked it up I fell in love with it!  It was so clean and even had the original floor stand. IMG_0123

I asked Justin if he would be interested in a conversion trade for our 1960 GE conversion that he completed for us sometime back.  Luckily, he agreed.  The General Electric conversion was dynamite, but this style TV works better with our decor.

This television is now in our guest bedroom.  I refinished the cabinet to match the Franklin Shockey bedroom set in the room.  It all looks so fantastic together.

These are nondescript corner speakers.  I plan to replace the fabric on both of them with something atomic.  I’ll also refinish them in the champagne Heywood Wakefield toner sold by Jeff at Needful_Useful_Things on eBay.

These are the corner mount wall speakers that Mel and I picked up to complement the Sylvania.  I plan to rewire them and get them hung in time for the up and coming Sacramento Mid-Century Modern Home Tour.

Justin also added more modern connectivity to the back of the set.

IMG_0115

Of course, this is what these televisions are known for, the ring of light on the front.  I am so glad we have a Halo in our collection now.  This is such a unique television.

IMG_0117

This television has a pleasing glow and has multiple setting for the brightness of the surround.

IMG_0124

We had this fantastic asian television lamp that I knew would look great on this set.  The whole idea of the Halo television was to make tv lamps obsolete, but I couldn’t help myself.

IMG_0121

I plan to just have a DVD player hooked up to it so guests can watch any of the classic movie flicks we have in our collection.

This was the last piece of furniture to add to this room.  I couldn’t be more pleased with the look of this room.

Hepcat Restorations Guest Bedroom

We picked up this set back in February.  We had been looking for a set that would work in our guest bedroom and this was it!

IMG_9818

I decided to refinish it in the champagne stain sold by Jeff at Needful_Useful_Things on eBay.  I love the warm finish of this stain and have always been a fan of light finishes.

I love the legs on these pieces.

IMG_9821

The footboard is very similar to the “Dogbone” style Heywood Wakefield footboard.

IMG_9822My pops is scheduled to come out soon from Las Vegas, so I’m glad to have this room ready for him.

Mel and I have snatched up vintage patio/outdoor pieces for our backyard.  We have yet to revamp our backyard, but we want to have cool pieces to put back there once done.  We saw this set on eBay and thought that shipping would be ridiculous so we passed on it.

IMG_9787

I was cruising Craigslist a few days ago and stumbled across the eBay set in Livingston California.  This was about an hour and half drive from us!  I didn’t realize that the eBay seller was so close to us.

IMG_9790

I jumped in the truck and shot down to Livingston California.  When I arrived, I was happy I made the drive because the set was in great structural condition! There is no physical damage to any of the pieces.

IMG_9786

I plan to keep them the same color, but all of it will need to be refinished.

IMG_9795

We are so pleased that this set was still available.  It will pair nicely with the other Fibrella Le Barron set we picked up a while ago from our friends Donny and Romy of Donny O Antiques.

IMG_9794

These will go in storage for now, but hopefully we will start on our backyard soon so I can refinish these and get the backyard set up for social gatherings.

Atomic Saucer Table Lamps

Atomic Saucer Table Lamps

IMG_8776.JPGMel and I were searching for some cool lamps for our guest bedroom and came across these at a local antique store. These are still dusty and need a good cleaning and possible rewire.

IMG_8773I really dig the way the light is thrown by these lamps. It lights by reflecting light off of the white underpart of the shade.

IMG_8778I am not sure what my plans are for this set. I was thinking of taking them apart and powder coating them two different colors. I would do the base a different color than the shade.

IMG_8768

I could see these being used in an office setting or a doctors office.

IMG_8770We planned on finding a nice Reglor lamp set or Continental Art Company lamps but when we saw these there was no looking back.

IMG_8769

We plan to have these set on the two end tables of the Sculpted Maple set we recently picked up.

IMG_8774We’ll make sure to update you’ll when we finish the restoration on these spatular set!

Vintage Fibrella “Le Barron” Pool and Patio Furniture

IMG_7340

Our friends Donny and Romy seem to find the coolest things. A while back they scored this patio set and were looking to sell it. Mel and I saw pics of it and we knew it must be ours.

IMG_7341

These were the photos Donny took of them. I wanted to just do a quick post on them before I start to buff and polish them up.

IMG_7343

Even has original tag! Can’t wait to get these done.
